Markus Persson, known as Notch, the creator of Minecraf
Markus Persson, known as Notch, the creator of Minecraft, wrote a memorial post after his father’s death, on Christmas. The piece does not begin with addiction or family collapse, but with warm, intimate memories. His father loved books and films, made jokes, and introduced his son to the joy of computers and creativity.
Over the years, however, his father struggled with alcohol, became separated from his family, and the distance between father and son grew. Even so, Notch had not given up on him. After Minecraft became a success, he planned to bring his father closer and help him start a new life. But before that could happen, his father took his own life.
The memorial does not judge him, nor does it idealize him. What remains is the quiet grief of a son who has lost a flawed but beloved father, along with regret, affection, and the sorrow of having to live in a world without him.
